Preparing Students for Group WorkI've found, and perhaps you have too, that many ofmy students who come to me each year are already familiar with working ingroups. However, I have to assume thatsome are not.
As a result, I work withthe entire class to establish the rules for successful group work.Through a brainstorming session with the kids, Itry to guide them into establishing reasonable rules for group work so thatthey will have some sense of 'buying into it.' And, as you can imagine, the kids who ARE familiarwith working in groups help to steer the rest of the kids into an appropriateframe of mind.Using this process, we as a class develop a list ofwhat group members should try to do and a list of what they should try not todo. Achieving Group DiversityWhatever your grouping strategy is for your kids, Iwould recommend that you make each group as diverse as possible. I have assigned the individual tasks to eachstudent, and I've also tried providing a brief description of the roles andallowing students in each group to determine who is going to do what.Because it serves as a sort of warm-up activity forgroup work, I prefer the latter approach-particularly near the beginning of aschool year.I do strongly believe, however, that individualroles should be rotated after a logical passage of time.
